Deputy 2017: A Year In Review

Ashik Ahmed, CEO, CTO & Co-Founder
December 21, 2017

In the blink of an eye, we have found ourselves once again rounding out another huge year here at Deputy and setting our sights on a bigger (and better than ever) 2018.

While we have lots of exciting things to reveal in the coming months, the fast approaching new year marks a great time to reflect on the incredible achievements of the past year.

From our Series A funding round at the end of 2016, to releasing hundreds of new product features and celebrating our NINTH birthday in November, it has been a great year at Deputy, and it is with great pleasure that I share with you some of the highlights of 2017.

OpenView invests $25M in Deputy

‘Twas the night before Christmas in 2016 that Deputy was confirmed to receive $25M in Series A funding from the Boston based firm, OpenView. As the largest single investment that OpenView has ever made, this kicked off what has been a truly great relationship between our two companies, and set the stage for our enormous year of growth in 2017.

Moving, Shaking and Growing

In 2017 we continued rounding out our global executive team with two big wins: Ian Torrance joining us as our new Chief Financial Officer and Luke Targett starting as our new Chief Marketing Officer.

Our US team grew from just five employees in 2016, to close out the year with 26! To make room for all these new superstars, we also moved our Americas office from Alpharetta to the bustling tech hub of Buckhead, Atlanta.

Our UK team also started expanding this year, as our Head of Sales in EMEA was joined by three new team members, and have been kicking goals all year.

Meanwhile in Deputy’s HQ Sydney, we have more than doubled our team, drank more than 17,000 cups of coffee (thanks Cuckoo Callay), eaten over 5,500 Ume burgers, and posted 177 times to our awesome Instagram page (and yes, this might be a subtle plug to check it out and give us a follow if you haven’t already).

Product Releases: The top 12 for 2017

Our customers needs are important to us, and it is your feedback and suggestions that keep us constantly innovating to make sure that we can make the life of employers and employees easier in any way we can. Of the hundreds of product updates we have released over the past year, it’s hard for me to pick just 12! So these are the top 12 most requested features that we have released across the year:

1 – Custom branding – You can now customise your Deputy account through uploading your business logo and adding your brand colour

2 – Paid breaks support – Track your paid breaks and stay compliant through ensuring employees are taking the right breaks

3 – Custom Pay Rates library – We added multiple built-in pay templates to make sure your business stays wage compliant (from Australia, to Canada, Singapore and USA state labour laws)

4 – New Schedule Export – We know some businesses still like to print – so it may as well be beautiful! This new updates makes exporting to excel a breeze, so you can easily share your schedule any way you wish

5 – Training management – Upload any training documents and expiry dates to ensure employees are always qualified for the area they are working.

6 – Salary allocation – We know how important sticking to budget is in any business, so this feature allows the allocation of salary budget for a more accurately costed schedule.

7 – Sync employee leave with payroll – Why should you have to enter leave data twice? Once you integrate your payroll, you can pull leave balances right into Deputy so its easier for everybody to manage time off.

8 – Custom Report Builder – Visibility over your business operations is important. With this feature, you can now build your own reports through extracting any data you like from Deputy, to either save in your account for reference, or export to Excel.

9 – Custom Timesheets – A lot happens around just clocking on and clocking off. This release gives businesses the full picture, from collecting important information from employees and checking the progress of ongoing tasks, to maintaining business compliance and ensuring the safety of the team – experience timesheets like never before.

10 – Schedule in colour – Everything is better in colour! Add colour coding to your areas and enjoy increased rostering flexibility with our new 2 week and 4 week schedule views.

11 – Unavailability Management – This new feature means you are never left high and dry during the busy times. With the ability to designate how many employees can take leave on the same day, you can ensure enough of your team are available to help you through peak periods.

12 – Deputy Kiosk: Revamped – Our on-site clock in got a face lift! Start and stop shifts faster than ever before, with facial recognition technology for greater clock in capture accuracy, and multitasking support now enabling you to run Deputy side by side with other apps.

One Million Downloads

With our mobile development team having rapidly grown and working harder than ever in 2017, we aren’t surprised that the Deputy App is pretty popular with our customers. When we crunched the numbers, we realised that our App had been downloaded over 1 MILLION times… now THAT is truly exciting.

Awards and Recognition

For myself and the team here at Deputy, the greatest reward is always hearing stories from our customers about how Deputy has dramatically improved their working life.

With that said, we were also honoured and humbled to be included in a number of awards this year, most notable of which was being named Best Workforce Management Software of 2017 by G2 Crowd.

Through the dedication and hardwork of our growing team, I am also proud to announce the following wins for Deputy in 2017:

  • Announced 25th fastest growing tech company in Australia at Deloitte Tech Fast50
  • Announced 350th fastest growing tech company in the Asia Pacific at Deloitte Tech Fast500
  • Named one of PC Magazine’s top 20 business mobile apps of 2017
  • Voted GetApp Category Leader for Workforce Management from Q1-Q4
  • Awarded “Best Value” by Capterra for Employee Scheduling in 2017

Howdy, Partners!

Like any good Deputy, working with the right partner is important. As we continue to expand our ecosystem, we want to make sure that we’re connected with the best.

I’d like to take this opportunity to once again thank all of our strategic partners and integrations for another fantastic year of collaboration, as well as extend a warm welcome to our newest members to the Deputy community: Vodafone, Who’sOnLocation, BambooHR, Happy HR and Abacus!

Deputy 2017 Year in Review-11.2

And here’s looking at you…

This year, we were excited to see hundreds of thousands of you using Deputy to make your working lives that much better. Collectively, you guys also published a heck load of shifts – over 25 million to be more exact!

We got to have had 74 000 top notch conversations with you guys – which we know from the awesome ratings you’ve given us for our average 2 minute response time.

I have heard so many inspiring stories from employers and managers about how Deputy has helped to transform their business, and it is honestly such a privilege to celebrate these successes with you on your business journey.

We wouldn’t be the company we are today if it wasn’t for all of you, our wonderful customers.

From my business to yours, I wish you all the best over the holiday season. I can’t wait to see what we will achieve together in 2018.

Kind regards,

CEO, CTO and Co-Founder at Deputy
